Thursday, 17th July – Saturday, 19th July

The Reading Ale and Jazz Festival takes place at Christchurch Meadows. More than 20 breweries from across the UK will be showcasing “hundreds of ales, bitters and stouts” (according to the ‘Evening Post’), with six live jazz bands in attendance. Old boys of Caversham Boys' Club are invited to a 50th reunion on the 17th. The event takes place in Calcot at 7pm. For tickets and more details, contact 0118 923 1267.

Sunday, 20th July

The Albert Road Day Centre is asking for "unwanted bric-a-brac, books, unloved mugs and broken crockery, in-date bottles and tins and plastic ducks and toys" in connection with its grand summer fete, which takes place today from 12pm. The event is being organised by the Friends of the Centre, who are raising money to put on activities for the elderly who visit the facility. Tel: 0118 901 5361.

Sunday, 3rd August

A friends of Clayfield Copse meeting takes place at 10am in the Copse’s car park, for active conservation work in and around the woods. Saturday, 30th August

The Reading Pride gay festival takes place in King’s Meadow between 12 o’clock and 8pm, with a them of “Saints and Sinners”. Trade and community stalls are invited to book a pitch – for more information visit http://www.readingpride.co.uk

Saturday, 13th September

The date of the 2008 Caversham Festival. The organisers are looking for:

• Car park stewards and programme sellers on the day
• A build co-ordinator to take charge of the build arrangements
• A volunteer co-ordinator to organise task rotas on the day - a quick, easy but vital job
