News Archive - Week Beginning 10th Nov 2008

A very, very quiet week for news - which may well be a good thing in the big scheme of things.

Roads

RBC and Oxfordshire County Council transport officers have agreed to new warning signs and road markings along the county boundary on the northern edge of Caversham and Emmer Green. Roads affected by the proposals, which were due to be looked at by the RBC traffic management advisory panel on the 12th November, include the A4074 Upper Woodcote Road, Tokers Green Lane, Peppard Road, Kidmore End Road, Kiln Road and the A4155 Henley Road. Housing Development

A letter from an All Hallows Road resident comments on an earlier article (Reading Chronicle, October 30th) concerning damage to tree roots close to the T A Fisher housing development in the road. Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) caused the damage (described as "decimation") in their capacity as contractors to the developer T A Fisher. The letter says that SSE is trying to shift responsibility for the damage on to the RBC, alleging that a Council tree officer was "quite happy with the way things have been dealt with." The writer argues that the damage to the tree ignores the relevant British Standards on excavation round trees and breaches the conditions - the letter concludes "what remains a puzzle to the public is why an established local developer stakes its reputation on an unauthorised development, which, as the Council told residents: 'may cause the developer problems when they come to sell the houses at a later date'". (Reading Chronicle 18/11/08 p12)

Churches

Building work started on the 5th November on a new £350,000 community-focused parish centre at St Barnabas Church in Emmer Green, which will house a wide range of activities for the church and community. The church launched an appeal in June 2004 to build the centre - the building contractor Creative Construction and Design expect to complete the building by May 2009.
