Education

The annual report for the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) highlights 16 schools and nurseries in the Reading area that have received particularly high ratings - three from RG4 are included: the Chiltern College Day Nursery, Woodside Day Nursery and the Caversham Heights Pre-School. (Reading Chronicle 27/11/08 p10)

Elderly

Elderly residents at a Caversham Day Centre (sensibly unnamed, but we can guess where) are said to have "struck it clucky" (another mirthful classic from the 'Post' - how do they think of them?) following the delivery of three pet hens there. The birds were a gift from falconer Ray Prior of Newbury - and followed on from a garden makeover by Yell at the Centre last August. (Reading Evening Post 27/11/08 p8)

Road Safety

A traffic island has been installed on Rotherfield Way in Emmer Green to help pupils get to Highdown School, along with other traffic-slowing measures. The measures form part of a £300,000 package of road safety improvements in Peppard Ward, and follow on from local petitions to the RBC. (Reading Chronicle 27/11/08 p15)

King's Meadow Swimming Baths

A lengthy letter from Bob O'Neill (in his capacity as chairman of the King's Meadow Campaign) discusses the proposals of the Campaign to restore the King's Meadow swimming baths as a facility for the public, potentially with a temporary ice rink at the site during the winter months. The Campaign's scheme is said to have a clearly defined route for seeking the necessary funding, and the Baths would remain the property of the public. This is contrasted with a competing scheme to build a "luxury" hotel and flats at the site - "with a small token of public benefit". Mr O'Neill says that it is up to the RBC to make a decision on the matter - the Campaign has been asked to make a presentation to the Council in early December, and the public are urged to put their support behind the Campaign's proposals.
