News Archive - Week Beginning 15th Dec 2008

Another decidedly quiet week for 'real' news as Christmas nears. Perhaps that's not a bad thing.

Education

Paintings and sculptures produced by girls at Queen Anne's School for their A-level coursework were displayed at the SW1 art gallery in London for a five-day period recently as part of the school's annual Foundation Art Exhibition. One girl's work attracted the attention of corporate buyers - who bought three of her pieces for a four-figure sum. (Reading Chronicle 18/12/08 p12)

Thameside Primary School headteacher Jane Moore retired last Friday, December 19th, having spent ten years in charge of the school. A feature describes her achievements whilst in the role at the school in Caversham's Harley Road, including marking the school's centenary in 2006. She says that she is now looking forward to some "me time", with plenty of energetic hobbies. (Reading Evening Post 17/12/08 p4).

Politics

A letter from Mapledurham Conservative councillor Fred Pugh takes umbrage at an earlier news item (December 4th) that suggested that LibDem councillors are "the hardest working councillors in Reading". Cllr Pugh points out that his Mapledurham ward is a third of the size of other Reading wards - so it is unlikely to generate as many problems as elsewhere. He suggests that his ward should be singled out as being the Ward with the least problems, and says that all councillors, of all political parties, work hard for the communities that they represent. The Christmas card sent out this year by local MP for Reading East Rob Wilson featured a design created by an 11-year old from Highdown School in Emmer Green - two of the three runner-up designs were also created by local school pupils - one by a pupil at Hemdean House, and the other by another Highdown pupil. Shops

Reading East MP Rob Wilson was in Caversham on Monday, 15th December in order to promote the Federation of Small Businesses' 'Keep Trade Local' campaign. He visited Jennings the butchers in St. Martin's Precinct as part of the promotion, and urged fellow shoppers to make their Christmas purchases at local Caversham shops. (Sounds good to us!)
