Crime
Two men from south Reading have now been arrested by police on suspicion of armed robbery at the Henley Road Co-op on Tuesday, April 20 th. (Reading Evening Post 13/05/09 p9)
Environment
A Reading-based District Judge, Gerald Burgess, has banned a named group of six travellers ‘and persons unknown’ from setting up camp at 34 sites within the RBC area. In Caversham and Emmer Green these include the Albert Road recreation ground, the Amersham Road Play Area, Balmore Walk, the Caleta Close Play Area, Christchurch Meadows, the Clayfield Copse Recreation Ground, Emmer Green Copse, Emmer Green Recreation Ground, Hills Meadow and Mapledurham Playing Fields. RBC Labour deputy leader Councillor Tony Page said that he was delighted by the actions of the judge “because it shows the determination of the council to protect our important and public open spaces from unauthorised and unacceptable invasion”. Police
Two police spotchecks in Caversham’s Lower Henley Road on Thursday, May 7th resulted in 39 drivers being stopped for speeding. One of these offending motorists was arrested and bailed after being charged with obstructing police, driving while disqualified and having no insurance. (Henley Standard 15/05/09 p13)
Schools
Highdown School headteacher Tim Royle has said that the reinstatement of sixth form funding by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) will save Highdown teachers’ jobs, but will still leave the comprehensive (Reading’s largest) out of pocket. According to Mr Royle, the LSC has failed to acknowledge that Highdown is a growing school – leaving it with a £180,000 budget shortfall for this year. (Reading Evening Post 13/05/09 p4)
