News Archive - Week Beginning 3rd January 2010
The editors say: As the snow turns to ice and temperatures stay at or below freezing, we'd ask all our readers to keep an eye on anyone they're aware of that might be struggling - particularly the old, the ill or the unsteady. Even just a friendly word can go a long way for those trapped indoors.
Editor's Note: It's been an amazingly slow news week as Caversham / Reading and, indeed, Britain has been preoccupied by the snow and ice.
Crime
Police are warning local residents against conmen who targeted a home in All
Hallows Road off Henley road on Thursday, December 10th - who offered to
clean gutters for free but then asserted that the guttering was rotten - and
that they would replace it for £16,000. Although the householder refused to
pay, police have warned the public to be on their guard. saying that the
perpetrators may be targeting vulnerable or elderly individuals. (Get Reading

Environment
The 'Chronicle' and 'Get Reading' both comment on the plight of Amigo,
described as an 'elderly steed'. The aged horse slipped and fell on black
ice on Gravel Hill last Wednesday - firefighters were able to restore him to
his feet (he is said to suffer from arthritis), and Amigo is now reported to be
recovering at home - although he does have a cut mouth. (Reading Chronicle
