News Archive - Week Beginning 13th June 2010

The editors say: For anyone with long enough memories, the news ('Planning', below) that Reading Station will get revamped but developing the roads associated with it might not happen is all too familiar. For how many years did the IDR end in mid air? Reading doesn't need another half-baked scheme, no matter who benefits from any work that does go ahead.

Arts

A feature on the Big Art Picnic that takes place in Caversham Court Gardens on Wednesday, 23rd June describes the range of arts and music entertainments that the event will provide. The free funday is part of adult learning and education centre New Directions' Reading Arts Week, sponsored by the 'Reading Chronicle' and which runs until June 27th. Reading Mayor Gul Khan will visit the event at 4pm. The event is followed on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June with an art show at the New Directions centre in School Lane, Caversham - next to the Waitrose Car Park. Churches

A special animal-friendly church service took place in Caversham on Sunday, 12th June at the Highmoor Road Methodist Church. Reverend Jenny Dowding of the church said: "it went very well and everyone enjoyed it and asked when we were going to hold another one". (Get Reading 18/06/10 p31)

Crime

Inspector Penny Mackenzie of the Caversham neighbourhood policing team has issued a plea to local residents to take particular care of bicycles (and to be on the watch for bike thieves) following a spate of bike thefts in the local area. Overnight on Tuesday, June 8th alone, seven cycles were taken from sheds and garages. Anyone with information relating to stolen bikes can call Thames Valley police on 01865 841148.

A 12-year-old Highdown schoolboy from Emmer Green has been commended by police following his coming into his home last July and finding a thief stealing property. The thief threatened the boy, but the youngster noted vital details about the burglar's appearance which helped the police to apprehend him. (Reading Chronicle 17/06/10 p3)

Planning - Reading

Approved plans for the redevelopment of Reading Station are still said to be progressing despite a freeze to £15m of road-related cash linked to the project. The work put under review as a result of new Government policies includes road improvements to Cow Lane and Richfield Avenue. However, the main Station upgrade, including railway improvements and Cow Lane bridge widening are not under threat, according to Network Rail. Pubs

The Griffin pub in Church Road is launching a major fundraising drive for Sue Ryder Care after major success last year, when the pub's landlady Anne-Marie McCarthy was awarded Sue Ryder's 'most inspirational individual' award. Businesses taking part are given a £50 note by Sue Ryder and then have until the end of July to find ingenious ways to make the money grow. (Reading Chronicle 17/06/10 p9, Get Reading 18/06/10 p18)
