Read more) ParksFollowing on from last week, the award of a prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award to Caversham Court Gardens on Friday, July 30th is widely reported. The Green Flag is the national standard for parks and green spaces across England and Wales – the Gardens have also received Green Heritage site accreditation by the Civic Trust. (Reading Post 04/08/10 p19, Reading Chronicle 05/08/10 p27) PoliceCaversham neighbourhood police are reported to be stopping people who bike on pavements, having received a number of complaints about cyclists using the pavements on Caversham and Reading bridges. In the words of Sgt Rob Pitman, “cycling on the pavement is an emotive issue with strong feelings on both sides of the argument, but ultimately it is an offence.” Police are handing out £30 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) to miscreant bicyclists living beyond the law. (Get Reading 06/08/10 p33) RoadsA collision involving a car and a van on the Caverham Bridge roundabout at 8am on Friday, July 30th caused tailbacks on both sides of the bridge, and involved a woman motorist being freed from her vehicle by firefighters. (Reading Post 04/08/10 p4) RubbishA Freedom of Information Act request had revealed that the RBC, along with its re3 waste contract partners Wokingham and Bracknell Forest has been examining a random selection of residents’ bin waste, to find out how much and what people are recycling. Bins from 200 households in the borough were investigated late last year and earlier this year. The owners of the bins were not told that they were part of the survey.
